Venice, like other major tourist cities, suffers from the problem of “hit and run” tourism, with 27 million tourists a year, of which 75% visit the city only for one day.

This massive flow generates pollution, congestion and stress on the urban ecosystem.

To meet this challenge, Axians Italy has developed an innovative solution for the management of tourist flows, through the implementation of a network of intelligent sensors.

The devices, distributed over 35 strategic gates of the city, monitor  in real time the density of visitors, the speed of travel and the pedestrian flow.

The collected data, anonymous and GDPR compliant, is sent to the smart control room for analysis and optimization of resources.

The solution offers numerous benefits, including:

  • Optimisation of public transport, reducing air and water pollution.
  • Redistribution of tourist flows to avoid overcrowding in the most popular areas.
  • Improved cleaning, waste and routine maintenance management.

This model of intelligent management of the flow of people is not only useful for Venice, but can be adopted by any city that wishes to ensure a safe and sustainable movement of visitors.
